Does food affect a child's ability to concentrate?

Yes. Studies have shown that nutrition does have an impact on a person's mental and physical health.

Every single cell, organ, and tissue requires a daily supply of Essential Fats.

What are essential Fats?

Scientists have given essential fats (a.k.a. essential fatty acids or EFA's) their name because the body must have them to survive, but cannot synthesize them from any other substance we eat, so a direct food source is required. There are two groups of EFA’s: Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Approximately 80% of all North Americans consume a diet that is deficient in essential fatty acids (EFA's)

In children, essential fatty acids are crucial for proper growth and development. Their benefits are listed below.

Omega-3 EFA's are found in seeds and cold water fish like tuna and salmon

· Are important for brain function.
· Deficiencies can lead to impaired vision, poor memory and learning difficulties.
· Aid in the production of hormones that influence growth.
· Help to regulate pain associated with conditions like arthritis and inflammation (especially the type associated with chronic skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis).
· Help to optimize the immune system
· Regulate the metabolism
· Can help reduce symptoms often associated with PMS and menstruation in teenage girls

Omega 6 EFAs are found in seeds like sunflower, flax and pumpkin

Help to regulate cholesterol production

Keep the blood thin and assist in the processing of insulin

Where do Essential Fats come from?

Sources of Omega -3:

- Flaxseeds and green leafy vegetables.
- The omega -3 derivatives EPA and DHA are found in
- Tuna
- Sardines
- Atlantic halibut
- Salmon (Coho), pink and king salmon
- Pacific and Atlantic herring
- Atlantic mackerel and lake trout
- Tuna
- Soy products (tofu)
- Walnuts.
- Sesame and sunflower seeds
- Other seeds and nuts
- Land animal meats and fish are sources.

Omega-6 is also obtained from vegetable oils.

If you know your child is not getting enough Omega EFA's in his diet, try crushing a tablespoon full of seeds (You can use a coffee grinder) and adding them to his cereal or veggies. Seeds can often be found in the bulk section of grocery stores.

Considering the amount of processed sugars and saturated fats many children consume, supplementing their daily vitamin regimen with omega 6 EFA's may be beneficial to them in their later years by lowering their risk for developing heart disease or stroke.

There are also oils available at most health food stores. Check the refrigerated section for oils such as flaxseed, or UDO oils. They need to be refrigerated and never be heated.. Try to find blends of both the Omega -6 and 3 fatty acids, since we need both in proper balance for optimal health. 1 tsp a day is suggested.

Here are a few tips for getting your children to take the oils: Mix in a bit of juice, or freeze it like a Popsicle. EFA's also come in capsules if your child can swallow them. There are also EFA oils on the market today with different flavours such as orange or butterscotch which make it easier to give to children.

Omega-3 eggs are healthy, but only have a small amount of EFA's.

Nutrition and ADHD

-People labeled ADD are often unusually sensitive to diet and nutrition. For example, they may metabolize fats and carbohydrates differently than other people, or may react to food additives when others are fine. Popular processed foods are just full of unhealthy or non-nutritional ingredients.

- A 1994 study at Purdue University found that boys diagnosed with ADHD had lower levels of the omega-3 essential fatty acid DHA. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

- 1997 study found that 95 % of ADHD children tested were deficient in magnesium (Magnesium Research 1997,10)

What are Digestive Enzymes?

- Digestive enzymes from raw foods can begin the process of digestion as soon as, or even before, food enters our mouth providing a valuable jump-start to the digestive process. They break down the foods we eat into basic building blocks that our body absorbs and reassembles to build cells, tissues, organs, glands and body system.

- Digestive enzymes help to bread down food, so we can absorb the nutrients we need to build cells and bodies

- Digests proteins and helps poor digestion which causes many health problems

- Always eat salads with proteins (such as meat) to aid digestion

- Allows the immune system to better deal with virus, yeast (candida) fungus, bacteria and cancer by freeing it from involvement in the digestive tract

- Improves circulation, reworks scars, improves healing and helps with all health problems caused by incomplete digestion of foods due to insufficient digestive enzymes.

If on a weight loss program omit the dressings and instead squeeze the juice of a fresh lemon on salads. It brings out the flavor of the vegetables

How do we optimize our supply of Digestive Enzymes?

- Eat plenty of raw vegetables and fruits

-Chew food well.

-Salads and Raw Vegetables

-Vegetable Benefits

- Leafy greens are essential in the diet. Add these to all salads.

- Studies have shown a cut in calorie consumption extends one's l life.

-Vegetables are excellent sources of all vitamins, minerals, proteins, rich in fiber, and low in calories.
